Product Review

What this needs is to be able to steam press clothes

by   nutmeg7008 ,   May 16, 2006

Pros:  Looks nice. Can use shiny sole plate as mirror sometimes. Or the proverbial doorstop.

Cons:  Just about everything. This was not a cheap iron in price.

The Bottom Line:  Maybe your experiece will be better. I would look at other brands of iron. But I'll give it 2 stars, it did heat up.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I purchased the 4238 model with Auto Shut-off, being that older Rowena gave up and became clogged even though I was using distilled water in it. The new iron did not steam as it should. After all that is what you expect a steam iron to do. The only steam I could get from the iron was when I pressed the "shot of steam" button. And the "spray" button. But with just normal iron, no steam was seen or witnessed that should have come from the sole plate during normal ironing.

I called Sunbeam and being that the iron was only 4 days old, they sent me another iron. A model 4239 with a steel chrome colored plate instead of the 4238 which has a no-stick ironing surface. Same problem with this new one that the company sent me. Would not steam from the sole plate, except when I pushed the "shot of steam" button. It was very tiresome pushing that shot button all the time when ironing a linen blouse. The "spray" button would shoot the water 4 feet out in front of the ironing board and not on the fabric directly in front of it.
By this time I was pretty disgusted. I called the company again. They informed me that the warranty had run out on the first iron as it was made in 2004. I told them that I only bought the original iron on April 14'th 2006. And had the receipt to prove it. Well, it that case, your warranty is still good. So they are suppose to be sending me another identical iron to the 4239 with the chrome plate. We shall see what happens with this 3'rd Sunbeam iron.
It states in the user manual to not return the defective product to the store from which it was purchased, but instead to send it in for servicing. 4 days old and I have to send it in for servicing. Don't think so.
It also says in the manual, that each and every iron is tested. Well, I do not believe that, as any person using the iron even for 5 minutes, would see that it did not steam as it should and therefore did not pass inspection.
