Product Review

Underrated & Super.

by   Pokejedservo ,   Feb 25, 2001

Pros:  Casting, originality

Cons:  Despite originality I have to agree that the artistic license went a bit overboard.

The Bottom Line:  Easily not for everyone but this has quite the potential of a "cult classic" status.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

True one might suspect that a big Mario Bros. fan like me might be seriously disappointed in this one. But I'm not why you may ask I'll tell you. Well to start of course this movie isn't going to be exactly like the game you think they can actually do that? They had to make ii different so artistic license was of course expected. Although I had to admit that they could've made it more like the game. (Such as king koopa, big bertha, etc.). But other than that I think it treated the games well.

The things I especially like was the casting ESPECIALLY for casting Bob Hoskins as Mario. Bob IS Mario mario (sure Lou Albano was good as mario in the TV series but still). The rest was somewhat questionable at first especially for casting John Leguizamo as Luigi because he looked too young but then again perhaps that was their intention. Though I am a bit iffy about how they shown Koopa but Dennis Hopper does give an amusing campy villianous performance. Samantha Mathis as the Princess was alright I guess. And so was the rest of the cast.

Now I will try to mention the plot which is basically the story of the famous plumbers mario mario & luigi mario. They right now are busy with women, work, and nasty competitors by the name of scapelli. But meanwhile in the mushroom world (an alternate dimension) there are 2 guys named Iggy & Spike and they are sent to earth to kidnap a woman named daisy who is unknowingly the princess of the kingdom. They kidnapped plenty of the wrong women and are repeatedly sent back so yes just in case you didn't already noticed they are not the sharpest tools in the shed. Soon these worlds will soon collide and...opps I forgot that I shouldn't spoil it. See the movie if you want to find out of course.

Although in the beginning of the story it shows a scene of a tropical forest in prehistoric times. And there is a narrative (charmingly done by Dan Castellaneta of simpsons fame) about the theories of the dinosaurs. (So yes it does deal with evolution so that might make people a little edgy.) This basically has all sorts of elements of a cult classic Philosophical messages about certain issues, based on something popular, very "critic-proof", and has a very "hit & miss" treatment with the populous. Maybe I'm too laid back but basically this is just a film to take as the escapist fluff that it is. And if you don't and complain about how it "insulted your intelligence" then you get what you deserve.
