Author's Review
I was very sceptical of the XJ-2000, but it does seem the most popular on the internet. A look at epinions shows a wide variance of opinions. So, a couple clarifications. The 12v 10w power supply does get hotter than one would expect, but it's not problematic and seems of high quality. Per the bad epinions review maybe they're shipping better ones now? Also I found the general construction and quality, excellent; I took the entire unit apart the other day, all the parts are rigid and fit perfectly. The design of the thumb screws for plate cleaning could be improved, but it's really not something I would complain about. If you're a very "un-mechanically inclined" type, they could be frustrating.
The most subjective qualities are how well it works and how much noise it makes. Unless you live in a country house with zero noise, I don't think the XJ-2000, will bother you. After a careful reassessment, I don't think it's the electronics that make the slight hiss, it's probably the air particles being charged, before they're magnetically drawn to the plates and out the front. As one literally intolerant to mechanical noise, I can say this unit is not inaudible, but not bothersum. Defiantly not loud as some have reported, but since I think the noise comes from charging the particles, it may well be louder in a more polluted room. As for how well it works, there is no question for me. As the bright sun is shining in my window, I don't the see floating dust I once did, none. If you don't notice the dirt on the (stainless steel) plates you expect, remember it cleans by charging particles which are then attracted to surfaces (dust and vacuum to remove). Just breathing, it took no time to notice the air quality improvement.
That last sentence and the fact you can get a new one on ebay with 3 year warranty for $39 + $15 shipping should say enough. If you decide to get a more expensive type you can always put this one on your refrigerator, or give it to a friend. Their website http://www.surroundair.com/
