Don't waste your money....

by   zanshin1202 ,   Dec 20, 2003

Pros:  Graphics are good.....that's about it.

Cons:  Yell "Slice and Dice!" 4000 times. Congratulations! You just beat the game with Leo!

The Bottom Line:  If you must play this game: rent it first! However, I recommend just playing the SNES "Turtles in Time" game because it outshines the PS2 game in every way.

Author's Review

I've always been a big fan of the ninja turtles, and I own all the Nintendo and Super Nintendo games. Naturally when I heard that they were making a new game for the new consoles I was excited, and rushed out to rent it once it hit the shelves. I tried to like it, I really did. But it really was a big disappointment.

STORY ********** 5/10
----------------------------------------------------------
When the turtles first came out the story was based around the turtles fighting "The Foot"; the evil nemesis Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteddy, Leatherhead...etc. The original NES and SNES games followed this, however this game did not. They followed the current cartoon's storyline, which is fighting against "the Purple Dragon." The nemesis is still Shredder, however EVERYTHING else is totally different. So, if you have been watching and keeping up with the current TMNT cartoons then you will understand the storyline completely in the game, however if you are only versed in the earlier story then you might be lost, and thus not enjoy it quite as much.

Sound********** -5/10
-----------------------------------------------------------
Yes, that's right. A negative five. It seems harsh, but it fits. When you play the game and are attacking the enemies, each turtle has a couple unique lines they spout for each attack. It's repetitive and very annoying. Imagine hearing this over and over: Dumb goon in the corner pocket! Let's play stick ball, I have the stick, you be the ball! Let's play stick ball, I have the stick, you be the ball! Let's play stick ball, I have the stick, you be the ball! Let's play stick ball, I have the stick, you be the ball! Dumb goon in the corner pocket! Let's play stick ball, I have the stick, you be the ball!
ANNOYING, huh? That's how the game is, it only differs with what turtle you have and what annoying phrases you will have to listen to, over and over, with each attack you execute. And of course, you can't turn it off and only listen to the background music. No! You have to listen to leo yell "Slice and Dice" over and over!

Graphics********** 9/10
-----------------------------------------------------------
The graphics are the best part of the game; the cell shading is cool. It seems like the creators spent more time on graphics then they did on the game play.

Game Play********* 5/10
-----------------------------------------------------------
The game consists of a bunch of stages, and each stage has like five levels. In order to save, you must beat all the levels in the stage. To beat the individual levels you have to defeat all of the bad guys, which usually just appear out of no where. A little force field appears to keep you from moving ahead if you haven't defeated all the opponents. If you are low on health you can revive yourself with items like pop, bread, hamburger, etc. In the other games it was only pizza! I can't believe you drink pop in this game to get your life back! It's just wrong! While in the game all you have to do is smash buttons; there is no strategy. You just go level through level, hitting numerous goons and watching them disappear in black smoke, all the while listening to the annoying sayings. It really isn't that fun. You have a weak attack, a strong attack, and a special attack, which is nothing more than striking upwards. That's it. They don't even let you strike while you are jumping or in the air until you go so far in the game. They didn't even have jump kicks!! (Unless you could unlock it later in the game and I didn't get there, however I did get through a good part of the game). With only these 3 attacks it becomes quite boring, and very quickly. SNES had MUCH more moves than this, and a lot more fun moves.

OVERALL********* 4/10
-----------------------------------------------------------
I tried to like this game, I really did. But it just makes "beat 'em up games" look bad. After playing this game I put in Super Nintendo's TMNT "Lost in Time." It was amazing how much more fun the SNES was than my playstation 2! The SNES game was better in every way! So I recommend not playing this game, because it just puts the TMNT series to shame, as well as all beat 'em up games.
