Author's Review

What is the value of reading a literary work muddled with errors, a book that not only is disjointed and irregular but also is condescending and arrogant in its tone toward the readers?

Considered a magnum opus despite its inherent flaws, The Autobiography of Ben Franklin is more than the story of one man and his experiences: its defines the fundamental ideals of American society for the last two hundred years. This is the American dream in which any man, from even the humblest of origins, has the capability to elevate himself beyond those around him and become a reputable citizen through the lived virtues of industry, frugality, diligence, and prudence. It is the classic rags-to-riches story, the legend of the self-made man, the ability to transcend social barriers and become anything that one can imagine. However, the journey to the top requires continuous self-improvement and sensibility, both aspects of our own current American, individualistic, capitalistic society. Franklin embodied these values from the time he was a boy to the day he died, and in doing so established the tradition of the American dream that has inspired so many. In his autobiography, Ben Franklin describes his own pursuit of success from his first job in his father's wax and candle shop to his position as Postmaster General of the United States. Along the way, Franklin continually emphasizes the necessity of exemplary oral and written expression coupled with the virtues of industry, frugality, diligence, and prudence. In illustrating his own experiences Franklin pens America's first self-help book and subsequently influences American society for centuries to follow.
