Author's Review
"The Bridge on the River Kwai" is one of those war films that is excellent from the very start. This film will be ranked with "The Guns of Navarone", "All's Quiet on the Western Front", "Run Silent, Run Deep", "Das Boot" and "Apocalypse Now" in the annals of best war films of our century.
The story is a gripping one with three sections: 1) British soldiers imprisoned by the Japanese, 2) the Japanese trying to run the prisoner of war camp, and 3) the few soldiers who see it as their duty to escape. Gripping performances are given by all as no one gets their wish as to how things should go. The Japanese want a bridge to be put up on the river Kwai to facilitate rail traffic, but prove to be unable to manage their prisoners to do so. The prisoners stand up for still being soldiers and demand good treatment and respect, even though, to the Japanese, imprisonment means loss of face, honor and respect. Finally, the escapees are sent back to undo everything and learn that there is no escape from this war.
If you like any of the films I've listed above, then SEE THIS FILM!! You will not be disappointed. David Lean directed this film and his perfectionist directorial capabilities will engulf even the reticent viewer.
Again, as with all older films, get your hands on the REMASTERED edition to get the full impact of the colors and cinematography.
