Whenever I bring out a rhyming book to read to my daycare children, I know that it is going to be a great success. It seems we are born with a natural tendency to love to listen rhymes.
The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss certainly entertained and delighted my three young toddlers.
The Story
This book isnt so much a story as it is a book that rhymes in many different directions, about feet.
Left foot
Left foot
Right foot
Right
Feet in the morning
Feet at night
The book goes through many, many different types of feet. Small feet, big feet, pig feet, his feet, her feet, clown feet too. It ends exclaiming:
Left foot.
Right foot.
Feet, Feet, Feet.
Oh, how many
Feet you meet!
The Illustrations
This is where this book really shines. The illustrations are as silly as the words are, therefore making it most interesting to read or look at.
I have no idea what the animal looking character is
and that is the point of most Dr. Seuss books. The drawings are from his imagination and are fun to view. There are silly animals and exaggerated real animals and people that are drawn with a soft edged black pencil line. The colors that are used to fill in each object are bright and colorful.
The text is a large black font that is easy for these old eyes to see or for beginning readers to help in learning to read the written word.
My Feelings
I love most Dr. Seuss books and this one is one of my favorites. It is short and fun to read aloud. The rhyming also makes this a fun book for a child to read to themselves.
The use of opposites such as left and right, up and down, front and back etc. makes this an educational book and especially helpful with toddlers who are just learning these concepts.
This being a Bright and Early Book for Beginning Beginners means that this is a wonderful book for children just learning to read. The repetitiveness of many of the words helps them learn and identify words quickly and easily. Feeling successful also encourages children to want to read more, a great bonus from
The Foot Book.
Nuts & Bolts
The hardcover copy of this book that I have, was published by the Grolier Book Club in 1968. It was written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss aka Theodor Seuss Geisel.
This 27 page book is just right for people from infancy through adulthood. I enjoy reading the silliness of this book and Im sure other grown ups feel the same way.
