Author's Review
Laughs! Yes, we thought it was funny. Perhaps one has to be indoctrinated into British humor before this can seem like a comedy, and having spent some time in England (not to mention they are my husband's co-workers) we had that opportunity. We found the their slang and phrases added to the comedy. If this is to be your introduction to it, then you probably won't get as much out of this movie.
Andrew Hicks' description of the film was quite good, so I need not repeat that again. Basically, in case you haven't read it, the story line is about one man's quest to keep seeing his son by paying the money he owes his ex-wife. It's the way he plans to earn the money which keeps the film going and give it its title. Along the way, we also get a glimpse of how technology and hard times affect small towns, and how men of different "class" status can learn to work together. That's just a very compact version of the plot.
My mother saw this film and she loved it, too. She discovered if she enabled the closed captioning, then she could better understand the dialogue. Having been used to the British slang, we were able to pick up on it without that assistance. It's obviously not easy to read and watch the scene at the same time, but you'll want to watch it more than once anyway. Each time, you'll pick up something you missed before. For example, about our 3rd viewing, we realized why the mother must have suddenly died.
This isn't a family movie and it's not for instilling morals in the little ones, but it's good adult humor. These are not gorgeous characters in this film, so it feels more like it deals with real life and real people. This could have been based on a true story for all we know. The point is, don't view it expecting a big Hollywood production. That will be a let down for you. It's just a movie, a very funny movie.
We decided to replace our favorite movies with DVDs since that seems to be the wave of the future (and they are more compact); however, we have been very selective in what we replace. The good movies we'll keep on VHS, but the ones we simply MUST have will be replaced. This movie was one of the first ones replaced. Does that tell you how much we enjoyed it?
