Product Review

Don't judge a book by its title

by   lipglossq ,   Apr 12, 2002

Pros:  Light easy read

Cons:  The whole Pig thing is a bit strange; i.e. Pigman

The Bottom Line:  The book is very sad, but not in a heartbreaking kind of way. It was charming.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

STORY:

The story is narrated by two high school students, John and Lorraine. They're writing of a recent event that had happened to them while it is still fresh in their minds.

John is a bit reckless. He drinks, smokes, talks back to adults, etc. Lorraine is shy and unsure of herself. She, unlike John, has morals. They're best friends.

Sometimes, these two group up with another pair of friends (males) and do typical teenage stuff. One of these is to gather up and sometimes house and pick a random name from the phone book. They have a contest; who can keep the random stranger on the phone the longest. This is where the Pigman comes into the story.

One thing leads to another and John and Lorraine find themselves actually liking this man. They're not used to his kindness. John's parents are always nagging him, and Lorraine's mother is always telling her what to do and what not to do. But the Pigman, he asks no questions and accepts them for who they are.

But then something happens...but you must read it, for I will not give that away...

Ok, here's what I thought. The book was sweet. John and Lorraine were great characters. It's not great literature, it's not a real classic book that just moves you, it's just very nice. (Though it is kind of sad). I do think, though, that teenagers would relate to the characters John and Lorraine. I sure did when I was younger. As soon as the book started I already liked both characters. And it was interesting how they both dealt with the Pigman and his secret.
