A Pretty Sweet Flick

by   gaddams ,   Apr 12, 2002

Pros:  Christina Applegate, Jason Bateman, Some funny moments

Cons:  Weak plotline

The Bottom Line:  Pretty good, mindless, Farrelly brothers style "gross-out" humor. Not for prudes or those easily offended by dirty jokes.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I went to see this movie not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Though the script was lacking, it had some pretty funny moments and gave you a realistic girl's eye view of the dating scene.

Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz) and Courtney Rockliffe (Christina Applegate) are two best friends and roommates who live and love in the singles scene of San Francisco. They are professional "love 'em and leave 'em" players who have mastered the lifestyle of the permanently unattached. When they arrive home from work one day, they find that their other roommate Jane Burns (Selma Blair) has been dumped by her boyfriend of the past year. To help her out of her depression, they force their reluctant roomie to go out to the singles bar and pick up a new man for a fun fling.

While at the club Christina meets Peter Donahue (Thomas Jane) who puts her in her place, thus sparking her interest. After she accidentally spills his drink and buys him a new one, he apologizes for being so harsh with her and invites her to his brother Roger's (Jason Bateman) bachelor party later that night. Christina, afraid of being near any man who might be relationship worthy, doesn't go to the party and dreams of what might have been. The next day she wakes up obsessed with him and she and her best friend Courtney go on their adventure to find him. And of course hilarity ensues.

What follows is a female adventure in the "gross-out" humor style of the Farrelly Brother's movies ("Dumb & Dumber," "Kingpin," "There's Something About Mary" & "Me, Myself & Irene"). There are some pretty funny moments, but the time in between the gags is pretty empty. I guess fortunately for this movie, there are a lot of gags.

The strength of the movie comes from the performances of the supporting cast. Christina Applegate who you may remember from the TV hit "Married With Children" has put in a performance which may revitalize her struggling career. She is teriffic as Cameron Diaz's slightly more mature best friend. Another standout cast member is Jason Bateman as Thomas Jane's crazy best friend.

Overall, If you are looking for a few good laughs without having to use too much brain power, and enjoy the Farrelly brother's movies, then this would be a nice way to spend a few hour's on the weekend. Sourpusses that don't like dirty jokes or those looking for something to take the kids to should avoid this movie at all costs.

You can follow the yellow brick road, but don't get to close to Toto's mouth. (You'll have to see the movie to figure out what that means.)
