Titus: Shakespeare written for the big screen

Date of Review:  Sep 2, 2000
Review: Titus Andronicus is considered Shakespeare?s worst play by many Shakespearean experts. Maybe that?s because Shakespeare wrote a screenplay, not something for a single stage.

Titus is a massive tale of revenge, family, honor, betrayal, and...

Shakespeare Done Right

Date of Review:  Oct 1, 2000
Review: Titus Andronicus is Shakespeare's bloodiest, most violent, and most disturbing play. For a man that added 12,000 words to the English language and fooled around with "Midsummer Night's Dream", he sure had a lot of rage inside of him.
Julie...

Not your father's Shakespeare ...

Date of Review:  Jan 25, 2000
Review: It might be a truism that bad texts often make better movies than good ones, and when it comes to the works of William Shakespeare, what might constitute "bad" vs. "good" is relative indeed, but while disapproving scholars have spent careers trying...

Shakespeare, not for the squeamish.

Date of Review:  Feb 3, 2004
The Bottom Line: If Titus Andronicus were here, he would disembowel the Bottom Line and feed it its own viscera.
Review: Plot Details: Because plenty of people have never even heard of Titus Andronicus, I'm going to treat it like a new work and avoid spoilers wherever possible. This review reveals no plot points from the film, but covers the thematic content in some...

Taymor's Titus--The Violence That is With Us

Date of Review:  Mar 12, 2000
Review: I was forced to read ?Titus Andronicus? as an undergraduate English major. It was taught as one of Shakespeare?s earliest and worst plays. But it foreshadows some of his greatest?Julius Caesar, Lear, Othello. The prototype is the old Roman revenge...

Shakespeare.....Be classic or be modern...but PLEASE....Don't mix!

Date of Review:  Aug 22, 2001
The Bottom Line: Watch it for the acting. If you like classic Shakespeare, you may have problems. You will probably wish that they had stayed entirely in the time period of the play.
Review: I have long been a fan of Shakespearean plays and enjoyed films such as "Much Ado About Nothing" and the two "Hamlets" by Branagh and Gibson respectively. It may be just me, but I have never been able to accept performances of Shakespeare that were...

Ah, Shakespeare sans-Leo. I love it!

Date of Review:  Nov 27, 2000
Review: I have been on a DVD rampage lately and generally rent any film that i've heard good things about or grabs my attention. With Titus, it was the later. The cover featuring Anthony Hopkins doning a helmet and wearing blue war paint is quite eye...

Well worth a view, but not worth buying.

Date of Review:  Feb 16, 2001
The Bottom Line: In short, pick it up on DVD and give it a viewing. Most folks won't wish to keep it in their libraries, but it's worth the four bucks to rent.
Review: This is one of those movies that, in my opinion at least, everyone show see once. However, more than once is perhaps a little too much for most people.

Director Julie Taymor did a fantastic job of bringing this meandering and sometimes...

Date of Review:  Apr 18, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you are into stuff by the Bard, or just like the really odd and different, then you MIGHT like this one.
Review: Okay, I messed up. I didn't know that this movie was going to be a post-modernist or whatever it's called when one 'age' or 'timeframe' is mixed with another. Example:cars and motorcycles mixed with Roman culture. Roman soldiers walking behind cars,...
