Author's Review
Had to get a humidifier to counter the lack of humidity in Los Angeles, especially in the winter with the heater taking out what humidity we do have. We shopped and of course checked Epinions, etc. first.
For the price, this has lots of cool features:
- big tank for water that lasts about a week in our small bedroom
- set the humidity level that you desire and the Venta will reach and maintain it
- you can set the density/volume of the stream to high, medium, or low.
- humidity reader is fairly accurate compared to an independent one we keep nearby (to test accuracy).
- turns off (we hope) automatically if it runs out of water.
- does not use one of those large spongy filters that gets nasty (we had one of those types of humidifiers in the past but threw it out because of the yuck factor).
- the room is pleasant when on, like walking into a light fog.
- Our skin had been dry and flakey before we bought. Now we don't have to put on skin lotions every day to treat itchy/flakey skin.
- NO sound, accept for a tiny gurgle once in a great while.
- ok looking design for the money.
What I don't like though:
- It starts to smell after about two weeks of constant use (at night only). But after using only distilled water that problem went away.
- Using Los Angeles tap water, which is hard and has lime and other minerals, the Venta was putting out incredible amounts of white haze that clung to the piano finish of our brand new HD tv - but nowhere else. I'd have to wipe the white haze off every morning which couldn't be good for the tv. By using distilled water, that problem went away.
- wish it was more attractive looking.
Our friend also bought one and leaves it running around the clock in her two story living room. She loves it and her cat likes to put her paw up to the steam - it is that gentle.
Almost One Year Later
We started using the Venta again this winter, but only with distilled water. I forgot how quite and easy to use it is. It also has a calming effect - I sleep like a baby with it on! And haven't had to clean it out after 3 months of use - must be the distilled water.
