Author's Review
My 15 year old cousin was spending the night (I'm 25 by the way), so I rented Virtua Fighter 4 on PS2 this weekend. It is a fairly new release and so we gave it a try.
From previous experience, we check to see if the game is produced on a CDrom or a DVD. Usually the CDroms have poorer graphics and audio. This game is done on a CD, but the graphics are very good. The audio portions do suffer from the CD format however. Unlike the DVD games, there are no real video action or movie sequences.
The graphics are very well done.
Someone studied closely the anatomy and physics of actual martial artists to do this game correctly. My dad is a black belt and a computer programmer. He was very impressed. The action is very fluid and appears to be correct. The female fighter's breasts even jiggle when they fall if you pay attention. The only draw back to the game is that there are not many fighters to play with (it may have unlocking ones, but we didn't get an instruction book so we don't know).
As far as fighting scenes, they are as limited as the characters. Again, there may be more, but we didn't have the instruction book. From what there were, they were very well done. There are many layers to each scene. Action is happening in the background as well. One arena appears to be under water and has fish below the floor and at the walls. Another ring finds you fighting in a shallow pool of water. Waves and splashes are created well.
The sound is lacking.
One of the drawbacks of having the game on CD is the audio. It is very repetivitve, especially the comments of the characters. It is in stereo, but no apparent surround encoding.
Game play
There are several modes which you can use. Arcade and a vs. allow you and either the computer to fight each other. Unlike many games, the arcade does allow multiplayer play. I was disappointed that the game did not allow more that two players, although it listed multi-tap on the back of the package.
Controlls
When I play a fighting game, I don't take the time to figure out all the special moves...I don't even look to see what the regular moves are. I just start pushing buttons. My cousin trys to use the special moves on me and he usually wins because of it. The controls are fairly easy to pick up on, and in the options you can change the controller configuration if you prefer it a diferent way.
Although this game is on CDrom and it has limited fighters and scenes, I'd definately rent it again. I'll consider purchasing it when the price falls a little below the $49 new game price. As with all video games, I suggest you rnet the game prior to buying it.
