A must have small appliance for our cable TV cooking program was a portable deep fryer. We weren't interesting in a traditional built-in restaurant unit, but needed a smaller easy to store unit that could handle occasional countertop use.
Waring's Professional Deep Fryer is an absolutely beautifully designed product with all the features we felt necessary not only for our show, but mainly for safe and reliable consumer use.
Basically, the unit consists of 5 components: the stainless steel body, stainless steel oil container with pouring spout, control panel with attached heating element with diffuser, fry basket with collapsible handle, and the stainless steel domed lid with handle and viewing window. All have excellent fit and finish.
The unit is extremely easy and safe to use. The control panel figures out everything for the user. Simply fill the oil container with peanut oil (or your oil of choice) to the appropriate fill mark (about 1 gallon). Flip the toggle switch on, set the desired fry temperature, and wait for the 'oil ready' light to turn green once the oil has reached the desired temperature. Set the built-in timer and fry away.
The interesting thing we found in using this unit with peanut oil is how little oil was used. Paper towels never became saturated when draining the fried foods. Everything was cooked perfectly without that really heavy oil residue.
So far we have test cooked spring rolls, zucchini, and onion rings to absolute perfection.
Important thing to remember. This unit gets very hot and should not be set on surfaces the heat can damage. We use the unit set on top of a traditional broiler pan. Might also consider using a wire grill to protect counter surfaces.
The only slight downside we originally thought is the depth size of the fry basket. Though we all want to cook a bunch of stuff as soon as possible in reality, larger quantities will cool the oil too much and actually take longer to fry if the basket were larger.
Cleaning the unit was straight forward considering we're dealing with cooking oil. Save the oil in containers (after cooling down) and wash components needing cleaning with soap and water. Care should be taken not to immerse the control head in water.
Note: The unit comes with a breakaway safety cord. Care should always be taken when dealing with hot oil. Regardless of the cooking vessel hot oil spills can have devastating consequences. This isn't a toy. Keep small children away from this device.
A first class home use product.
