I read this book three times

This is the story of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, before and hence. It explains the histories of the Hutus and Tutsis and the intricacies of relationship between them. But primarily it tells a story in the voices of the Rwandans and of the author. The reader sees what happens before, during and after the genocide, which was carried out largely by machete and killed roughly a million people. Gourevitch asks the Rwandans he meets what happened to them, how they feel afterward, how they think they will go on. He describes incredible scenes in refugee camps which are hardly refuges.

I don't think any of the above accounts for why I read the book three times, nor was it from morbid curiosity. I may have been looking for what causes cultural or ethnic hatred. I don't know. I only know that this is a superb book.
