Product Review

Love It

by   noladown ,   Apr 27, 2001

Pros:  Tons of power, front A/V jacks, and 5.1 analog inputs

Cons:  Runs hot, no digital inputs

The Bottom Line:  I would recommend this unit to anyone that is willing to spend the money or anyone who can find these any more.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Despite the info given at the start, there are 5.1 analog inputs, front A/V jacks, and a really handy remote. I have had this receiver since Aug. of '97 and have never had a problem with it! I have several friends that have been through several receivers in this time frame. Not to mention that I have several other Yamaha components that date back to 1987 and they have not given me any trouble. This is very rare for components such as a CD player (which I have used everyday since 1987). I cannot stress the reliability of Yamaha's products enough.
The build quality of this is incredible. The front panel is made from brushed titanium, and all other sides are made from a high quality metal that feels very solid. The design of the front was well thought out. All of the seldom-used knobs and buttons are hidden under a very solidly built door. The volume knob as a high quality feel to it when you turn it, this may sound silly but if you would ever turn a cheap knob on others and then this one you would know exactly what I mean.
The power rating on this unit are very conservative, it claims 100 watts per channel. But what you have to look at is the fine print, this 100 watts RMS is with all three front channels driven at full bandwidth (20hz-20khz) and 35 watts per channel for the rear surrounds and for the Yamaha front effects surrounds. These ratings are also RMS ratings at full bandwidth will all channels driven. Yamaha also includes five way binding posts for all the speaker connections and is also capable of driving an additional center channel speaker.
There are only a few minor items that take away from this unit. This unit will run hot but never enough to be considered. The lack of an onboard Dolby Digital or DTS decoder is a downfall but yet at the same time it saved money for its owners down the road. For instance, with the 5.1 channel analog inputs available you can salvage the receiver when new formats come out. Now with DVD audio coming to market all the folks without the analog inputs is stuck unless they buy a new receiver. This one will accept the multi channel outputs from the player. If you buy this unit I promise you will not be disappointed!
