Author's Review
Clive Barker's book "The Hellbound Heart" is what inspired the gruesome, freaky, unique, and quite original horror film "Hellraiser", which inspired the hit movie series with four films so far. The movie "Hellraiser" really freaked millions of people out worldwide with its very intent mixing of reality with the supernatural as well as demons from Hell. The suspense, the graphics, the gore, the dialogue, and the story were just parts of the reason for it. The character Pinhead has become a known classic serial killer that can be compared with other popular monsters and serial killers. He mainly gets compared more with modern serial killers like Freddy Kruger, Jason Vorhees, Michael Meyers, and Leatherface than with classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, Wolfman, Creature From The Black Lagoon, or The Mummy. He can and has been compared with both of those categories, though. He is like the ultimate character from horror fiction that can be compared with a lot of others from a lot of other categories. He really got started with his major role in the movie "Hellraiser", but this book is where he really originated.
The book, like the movie "Hellraiser", is about a troubled man who buys this magic box from a mysterious warlock because he just feels the need to experiment with evil and the supernatural, as well as checking into different dimensions. He realizes that by doing so with the magic box, he will be releasing a lot of evil, if not worse, from Hell onto Earth, but he does it anyway. He did not realize, however, that the first victim of the evil he releases was going to be him, which he felt was totally unfair.
After he is believed to be dead, his brother and sister-in-law move into his house where he is still there and still alive, just not with his flesh anymore. Just like the movie, his sister-in-law finally discovers him and agrees to help him find flesh by bringing swingers home from bars to kill so he can have their flesh. The married couple's daughter eventually comes into the scene, then later becomes his main target, just like in the movie. The book basically tells the same story as the movie, except one big difference is that the head of the demons from Hell is the one with the hooks all over his body, and Pinhead is just one of his assistants. That is like having a stormtrooper being the lead bad guy in a "Star Wars" book and having Darth Vader work for him. The book still tells an amazing story dealing with a unique mixture of reality and the supernatural as well as demons from Hell with a lot of great suspense and great dialogue to keep this story as intent and "life-like" as a book can get.
This book should keep you at the edge of your seat until the end. You should not even want to put it down. It is a definite "must" for Clive Barker fans. Fans of the "Hellraiser" movie series should find this book very interesting because this is what inspired that series. It is strongly recommended for those who enjoy reading horror fiction and those who are intersted in the supernatural. This is a very good, unique, scary, intent, and suspenseful horror classic.
