Mycroft To Harry Potter's Sherlock.

Date of Review:  Oct 9, 2002
The Bottom Line: Wonderful story. Excellent characters. Daring and difficult subject matter. Inspires learning.
Review: For those not particularly in the know, Mycroft is Sherlock Holmes' smarter brother. Not only his smarter brother, but Sherlock suggests to us himself that basically Mycroft is to Sherlock as Sherlock is to 'normal people'. Mycroft is the one that...

Fowl Plays at Fairy Fantasy Games

Date of Review:  Aug 15, 2001
The Bottom Line: I really expected to love Artemis Fowl. It had interesting likable characters and a good plot but somehow it never quite gelled together into a great book.
Review: Here I am, 29 years old today, a voracious reader, having lived in many artsy fartsy big cities and I only just attended my very first book signing.

About two months ago my friend and I were in the Barnes & Noble in Framingham, a real hike...

D'Arvit! Artemis Fowl comes up short

Date of Review:  Aug 18, 2002
The Bottom Line: Recommended for light reading - just don't get your hopes up. My bet? You'll see the movie and for once, enjoy it more than the book.
Review: I was so geared up for this book! A friend loaned it to me, having not yet read it. It was the cover that drew us both in. Shiny gold sparkly cover that touts "Stay back, Human. You don't know what you're dealing with."

Who could resist?...

Meeting Artemis Fowl....Do these books get better over time?

Date of Review:  Aug 31, 2006
The Bottom Line: A fantasy novel for young adults that's strictly for the kids.
Review: As a junior high teacher, I've seen a lot of the "Artemis Fowl" series of books in my classroom. The 12 and 13-year olds I teach seem to enjoy them. So I thought I should see what all the fuss is about. After reading the book in a period of about...

It was prophesied by Ohm phlegm pot cleaner to Frond Elfen King

Date of Review:  Aug 11, 2001
The Bottom Line: This is a light reading book. If you like the genre see what you think, but don t expect to be challenged.
Review:
There is much controversy surrounding this book, and far be it for me to leave that type of thing alone. There have been discussions about the violence level, questions on who the actual hero is and finally the commercialization of the book...

For the Time Being, I'll Stick to Harry Potter

Date of Review:  Nov 25, 2002
The Bottom Line: Read it, if you're really curious. But don't say I didn't warn you.
Review: I wanted to like this book. I really did, and not just because I had actually bought it. I wanted to find a new book for children which I d like as much as I like Harry Potter books I mean, Tolkien is great, Narnia books are great, there are a lot...

readers won't be as impressed with this book as it is with itself

Date of Review:  Nov 14, 2002
The Bottom Line: An innovative approach: combining kids' sense of wonder with the integration of technology into their lives. But other than this one neat idea, the book is entirely intolerable.
Review: In these post-Potter times, kids' fiction has been enjoying a wild and crazy boom in the magic department. The book Artemis Fowl is a new middle-grade fantasy novel that's been thrown about lately in circles where that sort of thing gets thrown...

Bad guys are more fun

Date of Review:  Dec 14, 2001
The Bottom Line: Try this because it's interesting. Try this because you're suffering Post-Harry Potter Syndrome. Just try it!
Review: As a seller of children's books, i'm highly recommending Artemis Fowl to those suffering from Post-Harry Potter Withdrawl. As a friend of mine described, "it's Harry meets Die Hard."
A 12-year old Artemis is plotting domination on a global...

An up to date fairy tale

Date of Review:  Apr 12, 2002
The Bottom Line: I do recommend that you give this book a shot, just don't expect a complete masterpiece.
Review: It has been described as "a fairytale with attitude". Some people compare it to Harry Potter (Lord knows why). But after reading Artemis Fowl I can partly understand about what all the fuss is about.

The basic story: Artemis Fowl is a...

A twist of magic and criminal activity

Date of Review:  May 22, 2002
The Bottom Line: It is the best fantasy, criminal book I've ever read
Review: This book was a very interesting, fast-paced book that is a great sequel to the first book. It was a book that could keep you going until you finished. The only thing that might disappoint you is that the book is very similar to the first book,...
