Author's Review
Not sure if other people have had this problem, or if I just got a bad drive. However, I bought this drive and it died in less than a month.
Of course I had loads of data on it, and didn't want to send it to the manufacturer. Also, it sounded like the drive was still spinning up, only my computer wouldn't recognize it. So I pulled the unit apart, took the drive out (it's a 3.5" SATA seagate barracuda) and put it in a USB drive enclosure from radioshack. Now it works fine, so the problem was with the Maxtor (now Seagate) USB / Firewire circuit board, not with the drive itself.
So full marks for the industrial design, full marks for choosing a nice disk to put inside and 0 marks for quality of the electronics connecting the drive to the USB port. Hopefully this is an isolated case. I did a quick search and didn't see other complaining about this specific issue.
One other thing: If you are going to have this in your bedroom, you'll want to power it down at night, because the light on the front of the enclosure is too bright.
